This also helps with the Gradebook in Canvas to make sure that students not covering that topic aren’t getting populated with zeros or incompletes. This gives the students a “home base” to go back to if needed. Instead of having a generic “Project” module, I can create four separate modules based on those topics and assign the learning resources within them to the group that is covering that topic. I have a group project that is broken up into 4 categories and each group must do one of those topics. Just make sure to edit the attached assignments within them! Don’t forget that you can duplicate modules to save time. This is also a great way to add documents, external links, and other resources that may be useful for students with their projects. This option takes more time adjusting but it may be useful in your course! Instead of creating one group category in Canvas, you can create multiple group categories to make sure that the learning resources within the modules are being assigned to only one group. Group Categories and Modules for your projects That way students can submit their work at intervals to make sure they are on the right track with their project before the big deadline. “This is a Group Assignment” would be a great way to break up the project into smaller chunks instead of having the students submit everything at once. We recommend using “Assign Grades to Each Student Individually” on major projects within the course. We recommend doing the individual grading option to ensure accountability from each student on the project. If you want each group member to submit a portion of the project, then you would select “Assign Grades to Each Student Individually”. If you want one student to submit the whole project, you only select “This is a Group Assignment”.
There are two ways that you can use the Group Assignment option. Have you used the Group Assignment option in Canvas? The group discussion feature would be a great forum for students to plan out who will be doing which portions of the project and/or mapping out the project itself. This makes it easier for you to figure out which students are in which groups as well and you don’t need to go through a long discussion thread. With the Group Discussion feature, you can also toggle back and forth between the group discussions to see which groups have a strong foundation and other groups that may be struggling. This can be useful for you as the instructor to see which students are collaborating on the project and those who may need help engaging in the conversation! It also gives you the chance as the instructor to chime in when needed. When you use this feature, it allows the students to have discussions within their designated group sets. If your course works with spreadsheets, you can use Google Sheets to have groups contribute data to a research project and assign each group a tab of the spreadsheet to work in. It ultimately depends on the type of project you want students to complete for your course. Additionally, the document can be the paper itself and each student must contribute a portion of the writing. The document can be an outline or strategic plan for the entirety of the project (divvying out the workload, creating tables, writing sample collaborations, etc.). As mentioned previously, you can use this as a working document for students to plan their projects. There are multiple use cases for the Collaboration tab. Collaboration allows you to import assigned groups and/or add users from the People tab in your course. You can connect a Microsoft Office document or use Google Drive documents for the collaboration. The Collaboration tab is a great way for students to have a working document to build from for their project.
